Freedom of the Press #3 (G8)

Freedom of the Press #3 (G8)
Description:

What do free societies do when Islamic fundamentalism collides with freedom of the press?

Hundreds of British Muslims gathered outside the Danish embassy in London on February 3, 2006 to vent their anger over Danish cartoons depicting the prophet Muhammad.

Protesters held signs bearing slogans including "behead the one who insults the prophet" and "free speech go to hell".

Of the 19 Middle Eastern and North African countries rated by Freedom House’s recent press freedom survey, only one, Israel, is rated Free. Israeli media, in both Hebrew and Arabic, can freely criticize the head of government without fear.

In many surrounding Arab and Muslim states, journalists can be arrested and imprisoned, and media can be shut down for voicing opposition to government leaders and their policies.

Follow Israel’s response. Defend freedom of the press.
