Which Middle Eastern Country Provided Homes and Citizenship to 600,000 Refugees Expelled from Arab Countries?
Many Israelis know firsthand what it is like to be forced from homes and native lands without compensation. Arab countries expelled nearly 1 million indigenous Jews over a 20-year period starting in the 1940s. Despite its small size, Israel alone managed to reach out and provide humanitarian relief and citizenship to more than 600,000 of those one million refugees.
Today, these Israelis and their descendants are making contributions to society in politics, the arts, science and commerce. Since 1948, Israel has been a land of stability and democracy in a region of tyranny and unrest.
