Why Join Write On for Israel?
Write On For Israel/San Francisco is an intensive and exciting two-year program open to a select group of high school students that includes a free 10-day trip to Israel. Write On is a collaborative effort between J, the Jewish weekly magazine of the San Francisco Bay Area and BlueStarPR, a pro-Israel non-profit organization in San Francisco. Participation in Write On is completely free for students thanks to generous funding from the Avi Chai Foundation, the Koret Foundation, the Lisa and Douglas Goldman Foundation and the Dorothy and Harold Greenwald Foundation. In addition Write On is supported by the Jewish Community Federation (JCF) of San Francisco, the Peninsula, Marin and Sonoma Counties. For more information, visit www.sfjcf.org.
The curriculum explores issues in Israeli history, Zionism and the Arab-Israeli conflict while helping deepen writing, broadcasting, public speaking and new media skills. Seven monthly Sunday-seminars will be taught by top educators and professional journalists and will feature appearances by Israeli officials, communications experts, and political leaders.
The 10-day Israel trip will include guided tours of historical sites and briefings with Israeli officials and professional journalists. While in Israel, participants will spend time creating a short documentary video to be premiered at a student-organized event here in San Francisco. The skills students can acquire through Write on for Israel will help prepare them for college and beyond. Participants also have the opportunity to meet and socialize with twenty-four other Bay Area high school students during the seminars and summer trip.
